About this eBook

Jacqueline Carey is back with an amazing adventure not seen since her New York Times bestselling Kushiel's Legacy series. Lush and sensual, Starless introduces us to an epic world where exiled gods live among us, and a hero whose journey will resonate long after the last page is turned.

I was nine years old the first time I tried to kill a man...

Destined from birth to serve as protector of the princess Zariya, Khai is trained in the arts of killing and stealth by a warrior sect in the deep desert; yet there is one profound truth that has been withheld from him.

In the court of the Sun-Blessed, Khai must learn to navigate deadly intrigue and his own conflicted identity...but in the far reaches of the western seas, the dark god Miasmus is rising, intent on nothing less than wholesale destruction.

If Khai is to keep his soul’s twin Zariya alive, their only hope lies with an unlikely crew of prophecy-seekers on a journey that will take them farther beneath the starless skies than anyone can imagine.

I wanted to love this. I am a huge Phedre fan. But I could not. This is a strange book because there are two main characters, but this is through the eyes of a single person. This means you are supposed to get to know a main character through another's eyes, and it does not quite work. The first section of the book was excellent. A small but deep set of characters that you grow to understand and enjoy. In the second section of the book, she uproots the main character and throws them into an entirely different world with new characters. There is very little character development with the new cast. The third section of the book contains an entirely new set of characters, again. There is little character development, especially when you look at the rich characters you start the book with. By the end of the book, you have been catapulted around, with little understanding of how you got there or why you would want to stay.

I agree with some of the other readers in that the first part of the book is really good. After the two main characters start their joint quest with several other protagonists, the lack of character development of these others and the overall lack of depth on the remainder of the story are somewhat disappointing
