Google Earth (GE) has transformed the viewing, tracking, and analyzing of data on geological features, surface processes and events. Whitmeyer (geology and environmental science, James Mason U., Virginia) and coauthors introduce papers from a conference held at the Google, Inc. Headquarters in Mountain View, California, in June 2011, focusing on cutting-edge research in the areas of geophysical data visualization, digital mapping, virtual field experiences, and educational uses.
