關於作者

Giambattista Basile (circa 1575 – 1632) was an Italian poet, courtier, and fairy tale collector. Born in Giugliano in Campania, Basile spent much of his life in the service of various Neapolitan nobles. He is most renowned for his seminal work, 'Lo cunto de li cunti overo lo trattenemiento de peccerille', posthumously published in two volumes as 'Il Pentamerone' between 1634 and 1636 by his sister Adriana. Translated into English as 'Stories from the Pentamerone', this collection of fairy tales is considered the first of its kind in Europe, predating the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault, and has had a lasting influence on the fairy tale genre. Basile's literary style is characterized by the rich Neapolitan dialect and the use of stylistic elements that blend the oral storytelling tradition with a sophisticated baroque literary culture. 'The Pentamerone' is framed as a story within a story, a technique that has lent the work a timeless quality, inspiring countless retellings and adaptations over the centuries. It includes tales such as 'The Tale of Tales', which stands as one of the earliest examples of the literary fairy tale tradition in Western literature. Basile's keen observations of contemporary society, combined with his imagination and humor, give his work a unique place in Italian culture and literature.
