उधम सिंह का जन्म 26 दिसंबर; 1899 को पटियाला में सुनाम में हुआ था। उनका असली नाम शेर सिंह था। उनके पिता सरदार टहल सिंह सुनाम के पास उपल में रेलवे में गेट कीपर थे। शेर सिंह जब तीन साल के ही थे; तभी उनकी माता का निधन हो गया था। कुछ ही साल बाद उनके पिता का भी निधन हो गया। सात साल की उम्र में उधम सिंह के सिर से माता-पिता; दोनों का साया उठ चुका था। भाई किशन सिंह रागी ने उन्हें तथा उनके भाई मुक्ता सिंह को 24 अक्तूबर; 1907 को केंद्रीय खालसा अनाथालय में भरती करा दिया। जब उन्हें अमृत छकाकर सिख धर्म स्वीकार कराया गया तो दोनों भाइयों को नए नाम दिए गए। शेर सिंह को उधम सिंह और मुक्ता सिंह को साधु सिंह नाम दिया गया।
