Susan Ferrier (1782-1854) was born in Edinburgh, the daughter of a prominent lawyer who was a colleague of Sir Walter Scott. She was the author of three novels, Marriage (1818), The Inheritance (1824) and Destiny (1831).
John MacDougall Hay (1881-1919) was a preacher and father of the poet George Campbell Hay. In addition to Gillespie, he was also the author of Barnacles and the poetry volume Their Dead Sons. He died whilst still in the planning stages of The Martyr, which was to have been his third novel.
John Galt (1779-1839) was the author of several novels that focused on the Scottish political landscape. After spending some time travelling around the Mediterranean, Galt settled in London and started writing. He moved to Canada in 1826, founding two towns while he was there, and returned to Britain in 1829 to continue writing. He retired to Greenock where he died in 1839.
