Romeo and Juliet at a Masquerade I read a lot of romance, but I had read nothing by this author before. I was first drawn by the fairy tale theme in the title. It really wasn't quite *that* Cinderella inspired, but the enemies-to-lovers theme with a deep family backstory was certainly reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet in places. It was fun, too, that the author set this in San Francisco. The opening scene with the Ferry Building... I've been there, though it's been a long time. But it's fun when an author uses a setting that you actually know! By the way, I love the idea of having a masquerade ball in a contemporary romance. I am a massive fan of Regency romance, and a masquerade ball is often used in those romances but not quite so much in contemporary ones. Fun stuff! The characters are well drawn. I thought the heroine was strong and resilient, forging a new life for herself in a new place with a new job and facing a difficult past while still being true to herself and getting the job done. I'm not a particular fan of the billionaire romance genre, but I found the hero to be quite sympathetic because of his complicated family dynamics and his conflicted feelings toward the heroine. All in all, I thought this was a very pleasant romance read. I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I think this is the first I’ve read from this author, and it definitely won’t be the last. I found it to be an easy read that quickly captivated with Nelle and Grayson’s story. I had fun with the Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella comparisons. The story referenced elements of those classics while remaining wholly distinct from them. I loved Nelle and her desire to reinvent herself as someone stronger and braver than she’d been. My heart hurt for Grayson and the family expectations he was caught in the middle of. I really liked the way the book comes full circle and deals with the ghosts of the past. I’m curious to see what the author has in store next. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book through Booksprout.

This is the first book that i have read by Susannah Erwin but not the last as it was a real page turner that kept me reading to see what would happen next. Nelle and Grayson's family are bitter rivals and that could be a problem for them as they have such strong chemistry that takes them both by surprise and that will take some getting use to but will it be enough for them to have a future or is it all fake. I recommend you read this book as it is so well written and a great read. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
