The Book of Mormon is a God-inspired record made by the prophets of ancient peoples who lived on the American continent hundreds of years before and for hundreds of years after the time of Christ. They have been translated in our time by the gift of God and at His special direction. The authorized and inspired translator, with whose hands they were given to the world in a modern language, is Joseph Smith. The original writings and annals, compiled and abridged as they are now in the Book of Mormon, were engraved on metal plates by prophets who were ordered to record the affairs of God. These records have kept true knowledge of God, the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ, the sacraments and teachings of salvation. In addition to these gospel truths, the book contains a lot of information regarding the history of the people, as well as their social, economic, cultural, political and other living conditions.
