ऊसतोडीच्या हंगामाला जायच्या तयारीत असतानाच शिवाचा सर्पदंशाने मृत्यू होतो. त्याची बायको भिकू सासऱ्याबरोबर (दगडू) आपली तान्ही मुलगी बारकी हिच्यासह ऊसतोड हंगामाला खुर्डावाडीला जाते. बारकीच्या पायगुणामुळे आपला मुलगा गेला असं वाटून तिचे सासू-सासरे बारकीचा रागराग करत असतात. खुर्डावाडीला गेल्यावरही दगडू बारकीचा दुस्वास करतच राहतो. तो बारकीवर राग काढण्यासाठी टोकाचं पाऊल उचलेल या भीतीने भिकू भूमीताईंकडे काही वेळेला बारकीला सांभाळायला देते. ऊसतोड मजुरांना भाड्याने जागा देणाऱ्या, एकाकी असलेल्या भूमीताईंना बारकी ऊर्फ गौरीचा लळा लागतो. हंगाम संपल्यानंतर दगडूच्या गौरीला बरोबर न नेण्याच्या दुराग्रहामुळे भिकू नाईलाजाने गौरीला भूमीताईंकडेच ठेवते. भिकूने मागितल्यावर भूमीताईंनी गौरीला परत द्यायचं, असा लेखी करार झालेला असतो; पण प्रत्यक्षात जेव्हा गौरीला परत द्यायची वेळ येते तेव्हा काय होतं? ऊसतोड कामगारांच्या जीवनाच्या पार्श्वभूमीवर रंगलेलं एक उत्कट भावनाट्य.


ENGLISH:

AS CUSTOMARY, SHIVA LEAVES FOR SUGARCANE CUTTING JOB, WHICH IS SEASONAL. NEVERTHELESS, HE DOES NOT RETURN HOME AS ALWAYS. STUNG BY A POISONOUS SNAKE, SHIVA DIES IN THE FIELD LEAVING HIS PARENTS DAGADU AND KALSUBAI, WIFE BHIKU AND THREE CHILDREN, THE DAUGHTER IS AN INFANT. HIS PARENTS START CURSING THE GIRL SAYING THAT IT WAS HER EVIL-DOING THAT HE DIED. COMPELLED TO RUN THE FAMILY, BHIKU STEPS IN HIS SHOES. SHE CARRIES HER INFANT DAUGHTER WITH HER TO KHURDAWADI WHERE SHE MEETS BHUMI WHO KNOWS SHIVA AND DAGADU. BHUMI NOTICES DAGADU`S HATRED TOWARD THE INFANT AND DECIDES TO LOOK AFTER HER. SHE NAMES THE CHILD GAURI. A LEARNED WOMAN, BHUMI RUNS A SCHOOL FOR THE CHILDREN OF SUGAR-CANE CUTTERS. THOSE LABORERS RESPECT HER. WHEN THE SEASON GETS OVER, DAGADU ANNOUNCES THAT HE IS NOT GOING TO TAKE GAURI HOME. FINALLY, IT IS DECIDED THAT BHUMI WILL TAKE CARE OF HER. AFTER RETURNING TO HER NATIVE PLACE, IT BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE FOR BHIKU TO SURVIVE WITHOUT HER DAUGHTER. SHE BECOMES AGGRESSIVE AND WARNS HER IN-LAWS THAT SHE WOULD BRING HER DAUGHTER BACK. BY NOW, BHUMI HAS DEVELOPED MOTHERLY LOVE FOR GAURI. SHE IS WORRIED THAT THE NEXT SEASON, BHIKU WILL COME AND DEMAND HER DAUGHTER BACK. WILL SHE BE ABLE TO RETURN THE CHILD TO HER MOTHER? `TOD` IS AN EMOTIONAL STORY REVEALED BASED ON THE LIFE OF SUGAR CANE CUTTERS.
