Lone Star: A History of Texas and the Texans

The writer weaves a wonderful tale in an interesting manner. It was as much a western novel, aged drama, tragic opera, and dramatic war story as it was a history book. From the founders to the political legends that influenced the state to the outside forces and laws forced upon it the author made it more than facts and dates. For the author the story of Texas is about the land and the way it shaped the men and women rather than how they shaped the land. At once you can sense the author's taste for all things Texas. Although critical he is reluctant to be critical. Wrongs are acknowledged, but often justified or mitigated. Prejudices are embraced and excused as an outsider's fault. The author is clearly a man of his times without the vision or moral center to rise above it. Overall, I would recommend this well written book, but warn the reader that his/her own 21st century sensibilities will probably be offended.

This is an outstanding book & a pretty comprehensive history of Texas. Every Texan ought to own & read this book
