Karl was the best salesman who’d ever worked for me but then management got greedy. They screwed him out a lot of commission, and since he reported to me, they made me deliver the bad news. He was furious, of course, and even though I worked out some things so it wouldn’t be quite as much of a screw job, he was still being treated unfairly. There was no question about that at all. He wanted to quit, and he had every right to do so. But he made a deal with me. He’d stay. He’d stay if he could do with me what the company had done to him.
