Questa storia si svolge nei dintorni della città di Polkhomrí, in Afghanistan, negli anni dell'occupazione sovietica. Lo scenario è un paesaggio fisico e umano ridotto all'osso, rocce arroventate dal sole, arbusti riarsi, un ponte sopra un fiume in secca, un guardiano addormentato nella sua guardiola, un negoziante filosofo nel suo bugigattolo. I protagonisti sono un vecchio e un bambino seduti sul ciglio della strada ad aspettare un camion. Cercano un passaggio per raggiungere la miniera dove lavora Moràd, figlio del vecchio, padre del bambino. La polvere che sporca, soffoca e nasconde quest'angolo desolato del pianeta non può cancellare l'angoscia del vecchio, né far tacere gli interrogativi del bambino. Il vecchio teme che Moràd gli chieda la ragione della visita fuori programma. Teme che il bambino si metta a urlare che i russi hanno rubato i suoni del mondo e che la gente ha perso la parola e le cose non fanno piú rumore.
«Perché sei venuto Dastghír?» chiederà Moràd. E Dastghír dovrà raccontare la verità, se vuole essere un uomo, se vuole che Moràd continui a essere uomo.
