Virgil's magnum opus, 'The Aeneid,' an epic poem written in dactylic hexameter, tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who traveled to Italy and became the ancestor of the Romans. This epic has been celebrated for its national epic quality, its complex and sympathetic portrayal of heroism, as well as its profound influence on later writers, such as Dante Alighieri. What sets Virgil's works apart is their intricate synthesis of technical skill and emotional depth. His poetic style combines innovation with a deep respect for Homeric tradition.
