A new translation into modern American English directly from the original Russian manuscript. This edition contains an Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Tolstoy's life and works, and a glossary of philosophic terminology used throughout Tolstoy's literature and philosophy. "The Blizzard" (??????), also translated as "The Snowstorm", a short story published in March 1856 in the periodical Sovremennik which was birth from Tolstoy's experience of being lost at night in a snowstorm in 1854. This gripping story of the power of the natural world over man was very well-received. Ivan Turgenev praised the story as enchanting. Aksakov called the short story the most realistic he had ever read about this natural phenomenon. Druzhinin was full of praise for Tolstoy's description of the force of nature and considered the little story the best thing since Pushkin and Gogol written. With evocative descriptions and a keen sense of urgency, Tolstoy masterfully portrays the relentless power of nature and its effect on the human spirit. One of the greatest Russian writers of all time, Tolstoy is best known for his epic novels "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina." His works are characterized by their realistic detail and psychological depth. Tolstoy's later religious and philosophical writings influenced the development of Christian anarchist and pacifist thought. Tolstoy was an acquaintence of Gogol, Dostoevsky and a frienemy of Turgenev. He is known as both a novelist and one of the greatest Russian Philosophers, similar to Dostoevsky.
