A new translation into modern American English directly from the original Russian manuscript. This edition contains an Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Tolstoy's life and works, and a glossary of philosophic terminology used throughout Tolstoy's literature and philosophy. "The Blizzard" (Метель), also translated as "The Snowstorm", a short story published in March 1856 in the periodical Sovremennik which was birth from Tolstoy's experience of being lost at night in a snowstorm in 1854. Aksakov called the short story the most realistic he had ever read about this natural phenomenon.
