Wilkie Collins was the first great detective novelist. Wilkie Collins was the author of The Moonstone, The Woman in White, and other fiction. He was a contemporary and close friend of Charles Dickens, and his work is as much fun to read today. Often described as a bohemian with unhealthy habits and tendencies toward excess, Collins wrote at least nineteen novels and twelve plays in his lifetime and fathered three children. He died in 1889.
