Henty attended Westminster School before enrolling at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Volunteer service in the Crimean War and his work as a correspondent for The Standard newspaper provided him with rich experiences that he later channeled into his writing. With over 120 books to his name, Henty was a prodigious writer, known for his historical adventure stories such as 'The Dragon and the Raven' (1886), where he chronicles the exploits of the Saxon king Alfred the Great and his battles against Danish invaders.
