Apuleius, (born c. 124 CE, in Roman North Africa (modern-day Algeria died probably after 170 CE), was a man of many talents. A philosopher, writer, and public speaker, he mastered both Latin and Greek. Intellectually versatile and acquainted with works of both Latin and Greek writers. His travels throughout the Mediterranean exposed him to diverse cultures and philosophies, with Platonism particularly captivating him. He has been remembered for The Golden Asse, a picaresque tale that blends humor, satire, and fantasy. This enduring work has influenced countless writers and stands as a testament to Apuleius' remarkable creativity and wit. The work, called Metamorphoses by its author, narrates the adventures of a young man changed by magic into an ass.  

 His philosophical interests are evident in his other surviving works, including "The Apology" (A defense speech believed to have been delivered by Apuleius in a court of law, defending himself against accusations of practicing magic.) and "Florida” (A collection of Apuleius's speeches and excerpts from his writings, compiled after his death.), "On the God of Socrates"(A philosophical work exploring the nature of the divine and Socratic philosophy.), "On Plato and His Doctrine"(A philosophical treatise discussing the teachings of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato.) and "On the Universe" (A work on cosmology and natural philosophy, discussing the structure and nature of the universe.). Apuleius's writings reflect the cultural and intellectual milieu of the Second Sophistic, a period characterized by a revival of interest in classical Greek literature and rhetoric. This enduring work has influenced countless writers and stands as a testament to Apuleius' remarkable creativity and wit.

These are the primary surviving works attributed to Apuleius, although he may have authored additional writings that have been lost to history.
