Through a series of flashbacks, the seemingly meek John Dowell tells the story of two failing marriages. But all is not as it seems and the twists and turns of Ford's masterpiece raise as many questions as they answer.

Ford Madox Ford was an English novelist, poet and critic born in Wimbledon in 1873 under the name Ford Herman Hueffer. Ford suffered acutely from agoraphobia and in 1904 suffered a breakdown that forced him to recuperate in Germany before he could return home. In 1919 he changed his name because after World War I he thought Hueffer sounded too Germanic.
