About this eBook

Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning epic remains his undisputed masterpiece.

Set against the background of dust bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of the Joad family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel West in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision; an eloquent tribute to the endurance and dignity of the human spirit.

As a modern classic I was disappointed. the book is well written but some lovely sections but the effect was destroyed by the interleaving of non story chapters which could have been covered in a few paragraphs even though they were well written. I think the book tires too hard. For me this book with its emotive subject did not elicit an emotional response yet many other books, less well written and on less Important subjects have.

Harrowing tale of migrant workers in American early 20th century. Deals powerfully with themes such as income inequality, societal injustices, racism and xenophobia. An important book to educate oneself about the plight of impoverished workers and the need for strong government policies to ensure equality and fairness in society.

Eloquently written this though provoking fiction might as well have been written yesterday as 70 years ago. Look around you to see that as the rich get richer the poor become expendable. And as the rich become richer so they become ever more resentful in their fear of those from whom they have taken everything including at the very last hope and the will to live. Whilst this features only the poor that in itself only highlights how the worlds of rich and poor diverge and the poor suffer at unseen hands.
