A young woman, Ashley Savage, is Frank’s newest client. Her birth father, whom she never met and who played no role in her upbringing, has suddenly entered her life—though very indirectly. LAWRENCE FRIEDMAN is a professor of law at Stanford University. He teaches courses in American legal history and law and society. He is the author of A History of American Law, Crime and Punishment in American History, The Human Rights Culture, and Total Justice, among other works. Professor Friedman has also published The Big Trial: Law as Public Spectacle and, most recently, Impact: How Law Affects Behavior.
