Baroness Emma Magdolna Rozália Mária Jozefa Borbála "Emmuska" Orczy de Orci, known professionally as Emmuska Orczy, was a Hungarian-born British novelist, playwright, and artist of noble origin. Born on September 23, 1865, in Tarnaörs, Hungary, she was the daughter of a composer and a baron. Educated in various private institutions, including the West London School of Art, Orczy went on to create works that earned her acclaim in the literary world. Perhaps her most renowned creation is the hero, the Scarlet Pimpernel, who first appeared in 1905. While the 'Scarlet Pimpernel' series greatly overshadowed her other works, Orczy wrote numerous other novels, including 'The Laughing Cavalier' published in 1913. This historical adventure captures the charisma and flair of the 17th-century Dutch setting, showcasing Orczy's penchant for delivering engaging narratives with a romantic and chivalric edge. Her writing often celebrated aristocratic values and the heroism of the gentry, reflecting her own noble upbringing.
