In the vibrant city of Venice, a young merchant named Antonio borrows money from the Jewish moneylender Shylock to help his friend Bassanio court the wealthy heiress Portia. As collateral, Shylock demands a pound of Antonio's flesh if the loan is not repaid on time. Portia, disguised as a male lawyer, then defends Antonio in court against Shylock's merciless pursuit of his bond.
