DIVTargeted by drug addicts, a carnival taco vendor must defend his fortune/divDIV
After years playing professional poker, Axel Speeter knows not to trust people. Retired from the table, this no-nonsense old salt makes ends meet by selling tacos at the Minnesota State Fair, and he’s got two things on his mind: developing a state-of-the-art burrito, and keeping an eye on the $260,000 he’s got squirreled away in coffee cans inside his room at the Motel 6. He’s so busy perfecting his Bueno Burrito that he doesn’t even notice when James Dean walks into the carnival./divDIV /divDIVThis James Dean isn’t famous, but he’s certainly wild. A drug addicted ex-con with a taste for mayhem, he’s got his eye on Speeter’s coffee cans, but quickly finds that the old hustler is not as brittle as your average taco shell. When a crook meets a carny, someone’s bound to get hurt./div

DIVPete Hautman (b. 1952) is an American novelist. Born in Berkeley, California, Hautman moved to Minnesota when he was six. He attended college at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the University of Minnesota, and went on to work in marketing and graphic design. Dissatisfied with his work, Hautman turned to fiction, writing his first novel, Drawing Dead, in 1993. A rollicking story of an ex-cop whose gambling gets him into trouble, it was the first of five novels starring Joe Crow, Sam O'Gara, and Axel Speeter./divDIV /divBesides writing mysteries, Hautman has had success writing young adult and middle school fiction. In 2004, he won the National Book Award for Godless, a young adult novel about a pair of teens who start a religion based on worshipping a local water tower. Hautman’s recent novels include Blank Confession (2010), The Big Crunch (2011), and What Boys Really Want (2012).
