4.5 stars, a high rating for me! It's been a while since a book with a court case has kept me this intrigued. The buildup of angst in the buildup to the trial worked well. Thoroughly enjoyed the explanations of why certain actions were done in investigation and especially in court. The missing 1/2 a star was for the last few pages... just left a bit of a: 'huh' ?

Mind blown! Lance's writing sometimes borders on prose, ascending from a typical crime drama to deeper, more philosophical insights on the human condition. The plot twists and turns will keep you turning pages and grasping in surprise until the very end. I haven't read a crime book this good .. well. .ever!! This author just became a favorite. The reader will not be disappointed.

This is a superbly written piece of literature. I thought I had the plot figured out, and I did, but there was always "reasonable doubt." I'm usually a reader of a thriller story lines, but this book, in its own way, is full of action and subterfuge. I didn't think I would take to the book at the start, but I soon became enthralled. I hope you enjoy it half as much as I did.

About the author

Lance McMillian is a lawyer who gave up the courtroom for the classroom. For over a decade, he has taught Constitutional Law to future lawyers at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School. Lance is married to Justice Carla Wong McMillian of the Georgia Supreme Court. The Murder of Sara Barton is his debut novel.

Stories are powerful teaching tools because they marry information and context. Jesus taught in parables for a reason. Legal fiction, if done well, can make law more real by showing how law affects characters we know and care about. Sixty years later, To Kill A Mockingbird remains the gold standard for using the fictional courtroom to depict real-life truths.

Lance's writing career began as a weekly columnist for The Daily Tar Heel while an undergraduate at UNC. As a UGA law student, he also contributed columns to The Red and Black. In the academic realm, his scholarly work about lawyers and pop culture has appeared in leading law journals. He also contributed a book chapter to the American Bar Association's project Lawyers in Your Living Room: Law on Television, which included chapters by actors Sam Waterston and James Woods.
