About the author

Chan Heng Chee is the Republic of Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States. She is on secondment from her post as Professor in the Department of Political Science, National University of Singapore. She has served on numerous boards and committees including the International Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations (New York), the Council of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), and the Committee for Security Co-operation in the Asia-Pacific (CSCAP). Her publications include Singapore: The Politics of Survival, 1966–1967; The Dynamics of One-Party Dominance: The PAP at the Grassroots; and Democracy and Capitalism: Asian and American Perspectives, with Robert Bartley, Samuel Huntington, and Shijuro Ogata; and numerous articles and papers.
