"It was overemotional, over the top, melodramatic,” Hinton acknowledges. “But... kids feel that way.” And maybe (some) kids talked like these kids, in the Oklahoma 60s. At least one kid author did. Maybe it was a mistake to read this next after a Leonard Cohen thing, but I was glad to know Hinton was a young schoolgirl herself when she wrote it. Once I let her greasers have their awkward effeminacies and their oddly insightful expositions, the story was nice and solid... a YA classic for good reason.

A classic and absolutely iconic for all readers. This book is detailrd and emotional, and I kept finding myself with the urge to continue. It also just so happened to awaken my love for the 50s. The characters are great, if just slightly cliche. Even so, I was emotional attached and absolutely invested in them and their story
