This is a new translation into modern American English directly from the original Russian manuscript. This edition contains an Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Tolstoy's life and works, and a glossary of philosophic terminology used throughout Tolstoy's literature and philosophy. "The Raid" (Набег) by Leo Tolstoy is a gripping and evocative short story that explores the harrowing realities of war and its effects on both soldiers and civilians. Set during a tumultuous period in Russian history, the story follows a group of Cossacks (modern day Ukrainians) as they embark on a raid, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Through vivid descriptions and compelling characterizations, Tolstoy skillfully portrays the brutal consequences of conflict and the toll it takes on human lives. Amidst the chaos, the narrative weaves a tale of love, sacrifice, and universal peace. As a reflection on the human cost of conflict, "The Raid" holds a significant place in Tolstoy's oeuvre and remains a compelling and thought-provoking read for those seeking to understand the impact of war on the human psyche.

O autorovi

One of the greatest Russian writers of all time, Tolstoy is best known for his epic novels "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina." His works are characterized by their realistic detail and psychological depth. Tolstoy's later religious and philosophical writings influenced the development of Christian anarchist and pacifist thought. Tolstoy was an acquaintence of Gogol, Dostoevsky and a frienemy of Turgenev. He is known as both a novelist and one of the greatest Russian Philosophers, similar to Dostoevsky.
