About this ebook

The Hugo Award-winning author of The Delirium Brief reveals the secrets of The Laundry Files in an adventure of Lovecraftian horror and espionage hi-jinks...

As a newly appointed junior manager within the Laundry—the clandestine organization responsible for protecting Britain against supernatural threats—Bob Howard is expected to show some initiative to help the agency battle the forces of darkness. But shining a light on what’s best left in the shadows is the last thing Bob wants to do—especially when those shadows hide an occult parasite spreading a deadly virus.

Traders employed by a merchant bank in London are showing signs of infection—an array of unusual symptoms such as super-strength and -speed, an uncanny talent for mind control, an extreme allergic reaction to sunlight, and an unquenchable thirst for blood. While his department is tangled up in bureaucratic red tape (and Buffy reruns) debating how to stop the rash of vampirism, Bob digs deeper into the bank’s history—only to uncover a blood-curdling conspiracy between men and monsters...

Office Humor Supernatural Style This was very disappointing. The main character came off far more whiny than witty, and it turns out that mundane office drama and mind-numbing IT explanations cannot in fact be improved by tacking on demons, vampires, and/or any of the other million things the author dangles in front of his audience. It picked up at the end, but not before I'd wandered off and forgotten about it for a week...twice.

Probably my last read in this series. All his little quirky witticisms are reused from prior now, and he's totally mailing it in at this point. Your reward for reading this series is that each time you grab the next book, the first half is a complete and total recap -- sometimes several times over and over. Then later in the book, he recaps again and again. He explains the night watchmen zombies. He mentions the brain eaters from other dimensions. He explains any time Bob does something cool, just to break the momentum and bore the reader. Some of his other series are so good. If you got this far, and are on the fence, skip this book. Read someone else.

Absolutely fantastic spin on old myths (vampires) and new myths (tech management fads and high frequency trading). Laugh out loud funny in some parts, very smart everywhere, very polished in terms of editing.
