Lady Irina, Lord Vladimir's young bride, had demanded they attempt to contact the spirit world. "I must speak to my dear departed mother one last time," she insisted. So here they all sat an uneasy circle of nobles and servants, their faces bathed in flickering candlelight.
At the center presided over Madame Zara, a wizened spiritualist renowned for her abilities to bridge the veil between worlds. Her eyes were shut tight as she murmured an arcane incantation, rocking slightly back and forth.
"Spirits of the ether, heed my call. We beseech you to open the mystic doorway and allow the departed souls to walk among us tonight..."
A deathly hush fell over the chamber as Madame Zara's words seemed to catalyze something in the air. Lord Vladimir shot a concerned look at his manservant Bors standing vigil by the door.
Irina was the first to react as the temperature plummeted. "I feel a presence! Oh mother, dear mother, are you here?" She clutched the locket containing her mother's portrait tightly.
