About this eBook

For once, he has met a lady less inclined to marry than he is. How unfortunate that she is the only bride he will consider.

George Clavering is much too young to think about getting married. Yes, his older brother—and even his younger sister—have managed to tie the knot, but he has plenty more years of play and sporting events ahead of him before he need consider such a thing. Even matchmaking becomes a sport when gentlemen bet on the Season’s successes or failures in the club. He will not give them an opportunity to bet on him. Furthermore, why settle down when there are young women like Lady Alice who liven the sport of matchmaking with friendly wagers?

Lady Alice St. Clair is the fifth daughter of the Duke of Carr, and as she is independently wealthy and may do as she pleases, she has no reason to wed. She certainly has no intention of doing so. If the marriage mart offers nothing more than the unattractive boors who have presented themselves at her door for the past five seasons, it should hardly surprise her parents she cannot be persuaded to the altar. True, George Clavering has a full head of dark hair and a smile that is as mischievous as it is attractive, but no lady of character would change her mind for one above-average specimen of the male race.

For both, what began as a friendly bet between two bored guests at a ball turned into an earnest desire to help their protégés find happiness. And if some deeper feelings should stir in George to win Alice’s heart, then he has no choice but to dampen them. After all, Lady Alice has sworn she will not marry, and George has applauded her decision. For him to try to weaken her resolve now would be…unsportsmanlike.

The Sport of Matchmaking by Jennie Goutet is the third in the Clavering Chronicles, but a stand-alone Regency novel. Lady Alice has vowed to never marry, but loves matchmaking. George Clavering does not have plans to marry, but enjoys making small wagers. Our story follows these two new friends as they make a wager and walk a path neither expected. The novel had all things Regency with Almack's Vouchers, boxing gentleman, and carriage rides. The characters in the story were delightful, the conversations were enlightening, and the love story was believable and fun to watch. I was charmed with the story. Such a satisfying historical read that I highly recommend. I was given a copy and not required to write a positive review.

This review is of The Sport of Matchmaking (Clavering Chronicles #3) by Jennie Goutet. I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. It’s 1822 and all upstanding men and women of the ton are going through the ritual of the Season to have fun but to ultimately find a mate. Except for our two main characters Lady Alice St. Claire and Mr. George Clavering. Lady Alice thinks most people of the ton are, well aren’t the smartest group on earth especially when it comes to picking mates. And Mr. Clavering is much too young to think of marriage and responsibility. Right. On both counts. This is where the author shines. This book really isn’t about boring people and lack of responsibility, but of knowing oneself. In spite of all of your education, how do you know you aren’t one of the boring people? Are your actions above reproach because of who you are or because of why you do them? And who decides when you are old enough to be responsible? Is it a date on a calendar or the lessons you have learned? And finally, when, how, and where do you ask for forgiveness and give it? Of course all of this takes place in the glittering balls and parties of the Ton in a very rich London with detailed descriptions of clothes and locations. What would one of this author’s books be without a fair amount of witty dialogue! There’s even a dash to Greta Green to liven everything up. As with all of the author’s books, I fell in love with The Sport of Matchmaking in the first chapter. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

The Sport of Matchmaking was the best, the sweetest, and the perfect ending to the beloved Clavering series!! I loved learning more about George's personality, his kindness (which had shown a bit in Philippa's book), but especially, learning about his perfect match, Lady Alice. She's poised, kind, caring of her close ones (few as they are), and has taken the decision to not marry. I loved their conversations, easy banter, and updates on their wager (how it served to further their acquaintance, as well as start seeing the other in a different light). The topic of mistresses was intriguing, since it's not often seen in this Sweet genre, but I loved the different POVs seen through both George and Lord Anley, the impact and consequences for not only the man but also their family, and also how it ended up enriching the story and its outcome. The updates on past characters were great. A satisfying conclusion to a fantastic series that will always hold a special place in my heart. ~ 5 stars!
