About this ebook

#1 BESTSELLER • NOW A PARAMOUNT+ LIMITED SERIES • Stephen King’s apocalyptic vision of a world blasted by plague and tangled in an elemental struggle between good and evil remains as riveting—and eerily plausible—as when it was first published.

One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years! This edition includes all of the new and restored material first published in The Stand: The Complete and Uncut Edition.

A patient escapes from a biological testing facility, unknowingly carrying a deadly weapon: a mutated strain of super-flu that will wipe out 99 percent of the world’s population within a few weeks. Those who remain are scared, bewildered, and in need of a leader. Two emerge—Mother Abagail, the benevolent 108-year-old woman who urges them to build a peaceful community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the nefarious “Dark Man,” who delights in chaos and violence. As the dark man and the peaceful woman gather power, the survivors will have to choose between them—and ultimately decide the fate of all humanity.

"A master storyteller."—Los Angeles Times

King preys on everyone's worst nightmares, big and small, and sometimes those ones you don't know about until they smack you in the face. This page-gripping, just one more chapter, pragmatic horror story is one for the records! It had my heart thumping and my claws in deep from the first chapter and I couldn't put it down. Although there are many characters to follow, they are easy to keep track of once you get going. You may lose sleep at night while you grip each page...

I read this book when I was young, and I loved it. It is very long book and I couldn't quit reading it till it was done. That of course is when he caught me. I have been a fan ever since. Now I have noticed that his new books kinda just lay there a little bit. But he is older now and lost some of his fire and passion. I think that his gift is in his characters. His stories are usually good, but it used to be his sparks, no one seems to notice this in him.

Exceptional. King is a master at developing and maintaining a sense of dread in his work. Interestingly, the book could be broken up into two sections. the first half has one set of themes and the second half has another. but they tie together well enough.
