About this ebook

From New York Times bestselling author Thea Harrison comes the first of two explosive new stories set in the Elder Races world…. Dragos and Pia are back by popular vote!

***THIS STORY ENDS IN A CLIFFHANGER***

Saying goodbye to their old life in the Wyr demesne in New York may be hard, but Dragos and Pia are determined to create a new life in the Other land of Rhyacia.

At first, everything seems idyllic. Rhyacia is paradisiacal. Accompanied by old friends and new allies, the future looks safe and bright for Dragos, Pia, and baby Niall.

But strange things are happening beneath the picturesque façade. Items move unaccompanied, buildings collapse without justifiable cause, and even the most Powerful residents of Rhyacia can provide no logical explanation for the events transpiring. Whispered rumors point to something called the unseen.

As Dragos and Pia investigate, they uncover a greater mystery than they could have imagined, and they realize the startling truth…

They’re not alone in Rhyacia. The land Dragos had thought was uninhabited hides many secrets, a shocking history that’s not quite ready to be buried, and something more.

Something ancient, evil, and hungry. Something that wants to consume Dragos and take everything he holds dear.

Something that just may be powerful enough to overcome the dragon…

***This is book 1 in a series of 2 connected novellas. The first book ends in a cliffhanger.***

Another Elder Races story that captivates the reader. This book follows Dragos and Pia while they are preparing to change their life and in doing so discover a hidden secret in their new realm. It’s great to get a glimpse of Dragos and Pia’s life in the midst of the move to Rhyacia. I was surprised at some of the details that were seemingly missed, but I suppose that the big picture dominated Dragos’ day-to-day planning. The story introduces us to the unseen and reveals the strength of character that is not always obvious in Pia. Objectively it is a great story and adds to this engaging series. Personally, I dislike cliffhangers, but I can say that this one was somehow easier to handle. I can’t wait for the story to continue in the next book. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

as a novella, this is a quick & easy read, however I think it is geared toward those familiar the elder series already (those new to the series may find the characters, past referenced events, and general worldbuilding to be confusing). As novella, there isn't much time fit a lot of story in and this one starts on the slow side. if you're a big fan of Dragos and Pia and enjoy seeing bits of their everyday feel then you'll enjoy this part a bit more than if you want to rush right into the adventure. Things do pick up and start getting interesting, but alas that's were the cliffhanger comes in as the book comes to an end but the story hasn't. (luckily the author does make clear up front that there is a cliffhanger and that the full story is told over 4 novellas so this was not a surprise). while I'm curious where the story will be going from here, the slow start for such a much written about couple, brought the enjoyment level down for me. however, as I already mentioned, if you are a fan and enjoy any insight into this power couple's day and life, that slow start will not be an issue for you. arc courtesy of the author for a fair and honest review

Disclaimers: 1) I received an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are mine. 2) Dragos and Pia (the main couple in the novella) are my all-time favorites, so from the word go I was predisposed to like this book! As noted, this in the first in four installments that carries the arc of the overall story. To that end, you may want to start your venture into the Elder Races with one of Thea Harrison’s other novellas or novel. This one starts off with a bang and assumes you know people and the world. What the novella does well is explore the world-building and universe. We also get to see Pia and Dragos continue to evolve as a couple and individually. The novella has updates from other characters that we get to check in on. Overall, I finished the novella excited for the next ones and eager to re-read the Elder Races Series that foregrounded this novella.
