Durante un ricevimento nell'"eremo" di sir Charles Cartwright, alla presenza di una bella compagnia di amici, si verifica uno strano episodio: uno degli ospiti, un timido e pio pastore protestante, muore improvvisamente. Polizia e medico legale si trovano subito d'accordo nell'indicare, come causa del decesso, un comune infarto, e anche Hercule Poirot, che era presente, inizialmente non sospetta di nulla. Ma quando, poco dopo, un altro degli ospiti muore, in circostanze molto simili, il celebre investigatore dovrà ricredersi e dare avvio a un'indagine destinata a portare risultati clamorosi. Scritto nel 1934, Tragedia in tre atti, è un romanzo poliziesco decisamente brillante, dalla struttura molto cinematografica.
