«Racconta Stanislavskij che alla fine della prima lettura delle Tre sorelle gli attori piangevano, ed esclamavano "che dramma!" o "che tragedia!" A tali parole Cechov si rabbuiò, si alzò e usci dal teatro. Stanislavskij, che lo rincorse fino a casa, lo trovò non solo afflitto e depresso, ma fuori di sé. Aveva scritto un vaudeville, e gli attori lo prendevano per un dramma! (Questa reazione mi ricorda quella, opposta, dei "conoscitori" romani di Cechov, che alle recite delle Tre sorelle lanciavano sguardi terribili e scandalizzati ai malcapitati in mezzo al pubblico che osavano ridere a situazioni e a battute scritte per far ridere)».
