Originaria dell’Iowa, drammaturga vincitrice di un premio Pulitzer, Susan Glaspell (1876-1948) fu anche giornalista, romanziera nonché attivista per i diritti delle donne. Insieme al marito fondò il gruppo dei Provincetown Players, che ebbe un’influenza determinante sul teatro americano. Una giuria di sue pari, uscito su Every Week il 5 marzo 1917 e ispirato a un fatto vero, fu tratto dalla pièce Inezie, scritta e messa in scena dall’autrice l’anno prima. Oltre che una straordinaria crime story, il racconto fu considerato un testo fondamentale dai movimenti femministi degli anni ’70.
