Étudiants et habitants la font vivre sous le patronage des grotesques, statues de pierre représentant des créatures des folklores européens. Les mannequins anatomiques de Johann attirent un jour l’attention de Catherine von Grunewald, femme du margrave. Celle-ci le fait convoquer afin de lui montrer l’enfant dont elle a accouché quelques mois auparavant dans le plus grand secret. Cornes, queue, sabots de bouc : l’enfant est un faune.
En compagnie d'une mercenaire et de l'héritière de Mirabile, Johann va tenter de comprendre les mystères de Schattengau, ville ou l'art et la science prennent vie à l'insu des habitants.
