The user illusion is a metaphor for a proposed description of consciousness that is used in the field of philosophy of mind. This description contends that conscious experience does not expose objective reality, but rather provides a simplified version of reality that enables humans to make decisions and act in their environment, analogous to the desktop of a computer. In other words, it argues that conscious experience does not reveal reality.
