પરદેશયાત્રા પહેલાં હું પણ પશ્ચિમને આસુરીભૂમિ માનતો તથા ભારતને દૈવીભૂમિ માનતો. મારા મનમાં કૂટીકૂટીને ભર્યું હતું કે ભારત જેવો કોઈ દેશ નથી, હિન્દુ ધર્મ જેવો કોઈ ધર્મ નથી અને આપણી સંસ્કૃતિ જેવી કોઈ સંસ્કૃતિ નથી. આત્મશ્લાઘા તથા ગૌરવ પરદેશયાત્રાથી ઓગળી ગયાં. સત્યને ક્યાં સુધી નહિ સ્વીકારો? જેટલું મોડું થાય તેટલું જ તે તમારા અસત્યને વધુ વામણું કરનારું થઈ જાય. ભારતમાં, ખાસ કરીને ધાર્મિક ક્ષેત્રમાં, પશ્ચિમ વિશે બહુ મોટી ભ્રાન્તિ પ્રવર્તે છે. પશ્ચિમ એટલે જાણે કે નાસ્તિક, સંસ્કારહીન, સંસ્કૃતિહીન, ગુનાખોરીનો દેશ. જેમ આપણે ત્યાં છે તેમ ત્યાં પણ આમાંનું કેટલુંક છે જ; પણ આ બધાંને અતિરંજિત કરીને ભયંકર ચિત્ર દોરવાનું કામ અહીં થઈ રહ્યું છે. એ દેશોનું જે વિશાળ તથા ભવ્ય જમાપાસું છે, તેની તરફ ધ્યાન નથી અપાતું. આવી જ પશ્ચિમમાં પૂર્વ માટે, ખાસ કરીને ભારત માટે બહુ મોટી ભ્રાન્તિ પ્રવર્તે છે.
