After a century of civil strife in Rome and Italy, Virgil wrote the Aeneid to honour the emperor Augustus by praising his legendary ancestor Aeneas. As a patriotic epic imitating Homer, the Aeneid also set out to provide Rome with a literature equal to that of Greece. The sample is appalling. When people are buying ancient works such as this, they wish to see a sample of the translator's writing so they can decide if it's a good fit for them. Some translations are incredibly difficult to read, while others are more straightforward. But Penguin, despite having more experience than most in the industry, does not seem to understand this basic fact. Consequently I am not buying a book I might have bought instantly if only they had a clue.

About the author
Virgil (70-19BC) studied rhetoric and philosophy in Rome where he became a court poet. As well as The Aeneid, his Eclogues earned him the reputation as the finest Latin poet.
Before his retirement, David West taught Classics at the University of Newcastle.
