Seattle Police Detective Joe Dunbar knew he'd screwed up big time, maybe even fatally. He swallowed hard, followed by a deep breath to steady himself. He considered his options, and then he sighed: hell of a thing, when a cop had to call a reporter for backup because his own had abandoned him.
"Mac," he said softly into his phone. "It's Joe Dunbar. I need help."
