So much has changed in the world over the years, but the one thing that still remains for some is the horror of high school and the cruelty of some teenagers. Who We Were, is the perfect example of how the actions of one person can have such an effect on someone and how it shapes their life into adulthood and their life choices. I don’t need to rehash the plot on this one as it is best going in with just what the blurb details. I will say it does deal with bullying, mental illness and drug use which may be a trigger for some readers. Ber does a great job of handling these issues sensitively. Told from the point of view of seven characters, I was worried that it would be too many to keep track of and be overwhelming, but my fears were quickly put at ease and Ber does a great job at making sure this doesn’t happen. At no time did I have to go back to see who was who again which was a big plus. The characters are well developed and are diverse, which gives the story a good balance. Although I did not connect with all of them, they have been very well written and are believable in the roles they have been given to play. Who We Were was a great introduction to Ber’s work for me and she is definitely now on my radar for future books. I thoroughly enjoyed her style and was immediately taken under her spell and caught up in the web of drama that Who We Were has to offer. I also liked how I was kept second-guessing each of the characters and their motives all the way until the finale, which was a surprise for me. Who We Were is a fast-paced read that will keep you on your toes and enthralled throughout. It is addictive, highly enjoyable and is the perfect example as to why I have avoided my own school reunions over the years. Thank you to NetGalley, Viper Books and B.M. Carroll for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Who We Were which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
