A creature of ash and shadow on a murdering spree is jeopardizing Emberly and Jackson’s desperate search for the stolen research for a cure for the Crimson Death plague in this thrilling urban fantasy. Emberly’s prophetic dreams are changing and every instinct is telling her that the creature’s murderous spree is only going to escalate but with warring factions of vampires and the Gray Cloak after her she’s doesn’t have a lot of time to breath much less look for the research and the reader can’t help but get caught up in all the intrigue and action as Jackson and Emberly try to stay one step ahead of the bad guys, keep PIT happy and just survive. The characters are strong, bewitching and demand reader’s attention from the very beginning while the steady to fast paced plot keeps readers on the edge with lots of suspense, action and Emberly’s complicated love life which adds lots of flames to the story and by flames I mean that literally (really gives new meaning to setting the sheets on fire). Building tension and expectation ensures that the reader can’t put the book down and all the exciting battles with the bad guys, not knowing exactly who all the bad guys are and some unexpected twists keeps everyone on their toes. Well written scenes and details capture the imagination and make it easy for the reader to get totally lost in the story and the well-orchestrated events ensure that there is never a dull moment. Okay, first let me say that I have not read Firstborn (yet) as I somehow missed it but that did not stop me from enjoying this one although I do feel as if I missed a whole lot. Now, Keri Arthur always brings me the most fascinating series full of such intriguing character and refreshingly different elements and surprises, so it’s no wonder that I fell for this one because it certainly has an abundance of enjoyable qualities and Emberly is quite the heroine, so I can’t wait for more.
