I compare this to Anna Karenina in terms of difficulty, character development, darkness, originality, and pace. I had a hard time getting engaged for the first 100 pages or so. Normally that means I won't get engaged at all. This proved an exception, and I read the last half in one sitting. My sleep suffered, but I stayed entranced. Joseph has dialog that is almost impossible to understand. Luckily his part wasn't particularly big.

The book is written in an interesting way, almost all of it is told through an exhausting recount of one side character. The main love story though, is so shallow and childish. I don't understand how other reviewers can say it's deep and root for Heathcliff. That's all you can expect from wealthy families so isolated they have to pretend to fall in love with each other and stubbornly continue drama and feuds just to pass the time.

Fascinatingly well written and the story pulls you into it. Most of the characters are very unlikeable with the exception of Hareton who I was cheering on at the end. Heathcliff is a terrible guy but Catherine exacerbated everything & at times, particularly by the end I pitied him. But really well done though I did skip Joseph's dialogue because it was incomprehensible & I guess that was her way of showing his irrelevancy. Haha Don't love it but I'd read it again just to hate on Heathcliff & Catherine again
