Dar fantasma pariurilor îl stăpânește în continuare și este un prilej pentru surprinderea efectelor, în plan moral, ale obsesiei efemere pentru bani. Dumas pictează portretul jucătorului într-o manieră inedită, iar faptele vin în sprijinul tezei sale.
Finalul, are dimensiuni hiperbolice prin nebunia, atât la propriu cât și la figurat, pe care o propagă, lăsând în percepţia cititorului un gust inefabil.
