I adored this book. I actually saw the film adaptation first, and fairly recently actually as I missed it when it was first released. I fell in love with the film and now after reading the book I like it even more! The book is a dream for literature students or graduates because it is a short tale yet has so many layers on meaning I found myself thinking about it long after I had read the last page. I am a huge fan of unconventional romances and therefore I found the romance between Griet and Johannes fascinating and absorbing. I found myself rooting for them to fall in love and live happily ever after while at the same time hoping they wouldn't because I found the silences, looks and atmosphere between them one of the most incredible things about this book. The characters were very well developed and the writing style was fluid. There was no point where I found it dragging, it kept the pace and intrigue right from start to finish. I would highly recommend this to anyone. This is now on my list of favourite books.
