About the author
Mark Twain (1835-1910) è stato uno fra gli scrittori più celebri e amati della letteratura americana a cavallo fra Otto e Novecento. I suoi romanzi per ragazzi, Le avventure di Tom Sawyer e Huckleberry Finn, hanno formato intere generazioni, ma Twain fu anche un fine umorista e un severo e irriverente critico delle vanità e ipocrisie della società del suo tempo, aveva una grande passione per la scienza e una beffarda ironia verso le religioni. Anticipò il genere fanta-storico (con Il principe e il povero e Un americano alla corte di Re Artù), e per linfluenza che avrà sui temi e il linguaggio della letteratura americana successiva sarà definito da Faulkner il «primo vero scrittore americano».
