About this ebook

From the publisher that brought you Game of Thrones... Prince of Thorns is the first volume in a powerful epic fantasy trilogy, original, absorbing and challenging.

Before the thorns taught me their sharp lessons and bled weakness from me I had but one brother, and I loved him well. But those days are gone and what is left of them lies in my mother's tomb. Now I have many brothers, quick with knife and sword, and as evil as you please. We ride this broken empire and loot its corpse. They say these are violent times, the end of days when the dead roam and monsters haunt the night. All that's true enough, but there's something worse out there, in the dark. Much worse.

From being a privileged royal child, raised by a loving mother, Jorg Ancrath has become the Prince of Thorns, a charming, immoral boy leading a grim band of outlaws in a series of raids and atrocities. The world is in chaos: violence is rife, nightmares everywhere. Jorg has the ability to master the living and the dead, but there is still one thing that puts a chill in him. Returning to his father's castle Jorg must confront horrors from his childhood and carve himself a future with all hands turned against him.

Mark Lawrence's debut novel tells a tale of blood and treachery, magic and brotherhood and paints a compelling and brutal, and sometimes beautiful, picture of an exceptional boy on his journey toward manhood and the throne.

I have been reading fantasy for a number of years and was attracted to this e-book primarily due to the low price. I thought that it would be no great loss if the book wasn't particularly good. I was very much glad to find an interesting book with a great anti-hero character and rich setting with concepts I'd not seen before. I will definitely purchase the sequel!!!

Mark Lawrence has clearly taken some cues from George R.R. Martin when it comes to characters. Jorge is cruel, cunning, yet respects men he fights with. In all, he's a believable character, a cold and broken boy who fights against the world in order to rules it. The savagery isn't held back, so this isn't for the sensitive, but for those looking for a solid read, look no further.

The plot is thin. Could not find any redeeming quality to any character in the book at all. I was intrigued by the small mention of future tech and the fact that the setting was post nuclear war. Would I recommend this book. No sorry find something else.

About the author

Mark Lawrence is married with four children, one of whom is severely disabled. His day job is as a research scientist focused on various rather intractable problems in the field of artificial intelligence. He has held secret level clearance with both US and UK governments. At one point he was qualified to say 'this isn't rocket science ... oh wait, it actually is'.
Between writing and caring for his disabled child, Mark spends his time playing computer games, tending an allotment, brewing beer, and avoiding DIY.
