What a fascinating read. Getting an understanding of microbial world within my own body was a humbling experience. The gut truly is a superhero of the human body. The potential of the gut for the treatment and/or prevention of a myriad of health problems is very exciting. As depressing as it was to understand the damage of the western diet and industrialised food production, I was relieved by the fact that the "microbial species matters less than the job that they do". I am now motivated to do whatever I can to help the microbial world within me to thrive. I love the analogy of my gut microbiome as a farm and my microbiota as my own personal farm animals, where it is up to me to "decide what to feed them to optimize their diversity, stability, and health." About the author

Emeran Mayer, MD, has studied brain-body interactions for the last forty years. He is the executive director of the G. Oppenheimer Center for Neurobiology of Stress and Resilience and the codirector of the Digestive Diseases Research Center at the University of California at Los Angeles. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health for the past twenty-five years, and he is considered a pioneer and world leader in the area of brain-gut microbiome interactions.
