About this ebook

From the people who brought you the bestselling Confessions of a GP.

From stampeding nudes to inebriated teenagers, young nurse Michael Alexander never really knew what he was getting himself into. But now, sixteen years since he was first launched into his nursing career – as the only man in a gynaecology ward – he’s pretty much dealt with everything: Body parts that come off in his hands; Teenagers with phantom pregnancies; Doctors unable to tell the difference between their left and right; Violent drunks; Singing relatives; Sexism; . . . and a whole lot of nudity.

Confessions of a Male Nurse is a touching, shocking and frequently hilarious account of one man’s life in nursing.

I bought this after enjoying Confessions of a GP, and although it was a good insight into the life of a nurse and the different areas they train and get experience in, I didn't think it was quite as good. I expected it to be UK based (which a good chunk is) but a lot of it relates to New Zealand (to be fair there doesn't seem too much difference). Some of the anecdotes were shocking relating to the failings of our NHS, but others showed how good it can be when it's right. Entertaining and funny at times.

Not enough humour to carry the depressing parts of the book. This is not a great read if you don't want to face your own mortality and the numerous ways that you will meet your maker. Oh and don't forget the variety of hideous diseases that will befall you before your end. The writing style is substandard and you do not feel part of a story or even a spectator of events but instead you are reading an essay from a highschool student.

I can't say I haven't enjoyed reading this book, I have. There's just two things I don't agree with, 1) there is always time to bathe your patients. And 2) medical wards can just be as busy as a surgical ward. Apart from that I have enjoyed the book.
