Sursele folosite concizia discursului forta narativa dar si numeroasele digresiuni sugestive recomanda Istoria longobarzilor ca opera istorica si literara deopotriva. Originalitatea expunerii consta in tensiunea dintre perspectiva romanizanta si cea nationalista autorul longobard el insusi prezentandu-si poporul ca adevaratul mostenitor si continuator al civilizatiei clasice si crestine. Alaturi de Istoria gotilor (De origine actibusque Getarum) a lui Iordanes si de Istoria francilor (Historiarum libri decem) a lui Grigore din Tours Istoria longobarzilor reprezinta o sursa de prima importanta pentru cunoasterea realitatilor istorice politice si sociale din vremea regatelor romano-barbarice intemeiate pe ruinele fostului Imperiu Roman de Apus care in esenta au constituit baza formarii natiunilor europene.
